Without a trellis, they lie on the ground and are much more susceptible to diseases and pests. A suitable trellis should be solidly constructed and sturdy enough to support the weight of the growing plant and its fruit – cucumbers can grow surprisingly large and quite heavy. Five troublesome cucumber diseases and how to combat them
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that you can easily recognize by a white, powdery substance on the leaves and stems of the plant. The disease can lead to wilting leaves and a decrease in yield.How to combat powdery mildew on your cucumbers:
- Remove all affected leaves and stems to slow the spread of the disease and prevent it from spreading to healthy parts of the plant.
- Avoid over-fertilizing: Over-fertilizing cucumbers is more harmful than beneficial and can encourage the growth of powdery mildew.
- Make sure the plants are not too close together and, if necessary, move some plants to create more space.
- Home remedy for powdery mildew: Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one liter of water and spray the solution on the affected plants.
2. Bacterial Leaf Spot Disease

You can use fungicides offered by various manufacturers. If the blight is already advanced, the cucumber plants are usually beyond saving.
