Where is the best place to put up a garden arch?

Ideally, choose a sunny spot for your garden arch. Roses are real sun-worshippers and need on average up to six hours of direct sunlight to thrive.

Tip: Have you always wanted to sit beneath a canopy of fragrant roses? Then a rose gazebo, covered in flowering climbing roses, is the ideal choice for you!

Which rose varieties are suitable for planting on a garden arch?

Choose hardy and disease-resistant rose varieties that are well suited to your chosen location. Climbing roses or rambler roses are ideal for planting on a garden arch. The following rose varieties, for example, are easy to care for and produce abundant blooms:

  • Rosa helenae: semi-double, summer-flowering, delicate fragrance, many white flowers
  • Rambling Rosie®: semi-double, repeat-flowering, lightly scented, many red flowers
  • Lavender Siluetta®: double, repeat-flowering, lightly scented, many pink flowers

When is the best time to plant roses?

You can plant your garden arch either in spring or autumn. Moderate temperatures are important – frost can damage young roses.

How do you prepare the soil?

Before planting the roses on your garden arch, you should loosen the soil and remove any weeds. You can improve the soil quality by working in some compost. Roses thrive in nutrient-rich soil.

How do you plant climbing roses?

Dig a hole at the base of your garden arch that is large enough to accommodate the rose’s roots. Position the rose so that the graft union (the thickened area on the stem) is about 5 cm below the soil surface. Fill the hole with soil and press it down gently. Then water thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially in the first few weeks after planting. Water directly at the base of the plant, but avoid waterlogging.

How do you care for climbing roses?

Cover the soil around the roses with a layer of mulch to retain moisture, reduce the growth of weeds and keep the soil temperature stable. Regular fertilising promotes plant growth. You can simply cut off any dead flowers. Regularly removing dead flowers promotes plant health and can help prevent the development of diseases.

How do you train roses to grow on a garden arch?

You can give your roses a good start when climbing the garden arch by securing individual tendrils to the supports, thereby ‘showing them the way’. Use florist’s wire for this. However, make sure the wire isn’t too tight – otherwise the tendrils could be squashed and damaged.

When should roses on a garden arch be pruned?

Carry out a proper pruning in spring to keep the roses healthy and in shape. Remove dead or damaged branches and cut back the shoots to encourage growth. You can find detailed instructions on pruning roses here »
