Garden Trends 2023 – These trends will have a lasting impact on the garden

The most important points in brief

  • Sustainability and the conscious use of natural resources characterize the garden trends of 2023, especially through the use of organic products, the promotion of habitats for wildlife, and the avoidance of short-lived materials; Durable wrought iron products like the ELEO Grosetto plant support contribute to this.
  • Outdoor living continues to gain importance as a trend, with gardens being transformed into extended living and leisure spaces using elements like cozy Gazebos, such as the ELEO Florence Gazebo.
  • Wildflower gardens and vertical gardening promote biodiversity and add an ecological touch to natural gardens, while ELEO offers advice and durable decorations for sustainable garden design.

  1. Garden Trend: Sustainability
  2. With the start of the new gardening season, it's exciting to take a look at this year's garden trends. What's currently on the minds of garden owners, and what characterizes the design of their own green oasis this year? We present the four biggest trends and reveal in advance: Environmental protection and sustainable, conscious garden use are clearly the focus.

    1. Garden Trend: Sustainability

Sustainability is on everyone's lips – and is also changing private gardening. Environmentally friendly gardening involves using natural materials, sustainable practices, and protecting or creating habitats for native wildlife.

Use organic pesticides and natural fertilizers

Organic pesticides are replacing the use of synthetic chemicals to control pests and diseases. You can also use natural fertilizers, saving money on expensive synthetic fertilizers. Examples of biological pesticides and natural fertilizers include:

      Biological Pesticides

      Natural Fertilizers

Neem Oil from the Neem Tree Leaf

Compost from Garden and Kitchen waste

      Spider mite and ladybug relocations

      Ash and wood burning

      Garlic and vinegar solutions

      Chicken manure

      Green manure

      Ivy extract diluted with water

      Nettle manure

Natural fertilizers may not work as quickly as synthetic ones, but they promote sustainable soil health. Please be careful to use the correct amounts to avoid over-fertilizing. The rule of thumb here is: when in doubt, less is always more.

Create habitats and invite birds, lizards, bats, hedgehogs, and insects into your green oasis! Insect Hotels: Insect hotels provide shelter, nesting sites, and overwintering aids for important garden inhabitants such as wild bees and bumblebees. Furthermore, insect hotels are a beautiful eye-catcher in your garden.

    • Nesting boxes:Due to the ever-shrinking number of old trees, natural nesting sites for our native birds and bats are becoming rarer. Hang up nesting boxes – flying garden visitors will gladly accept them. Make sure that the boxes are hung high enough and are safe from cats.
    • Dead wood:Dead tree parts such as branches offer valuable habitat and food for a variety of organisms. Various fungi, mosses, beetles, butterflies, and bees depend on deadwood.
    • Piles of stones:With small and large piles of stones in your flowerbeds, you offer lizards, hedgehogs, weasels, and insects a protected hiding place and refuge in winter.
    • Water sources:Especially during summer months with long dry spells, many animals—especially insects and birds—are grateful for a permanent water source where they can drink.

Use of natural and durable materials

Not only in the kitchen and pantry, but also in garden design, you can take care to produce as little waste as possible. For example, choose garden furniture, decorations, and accessories made of durable materials such as wrought iron, which you will enjoy for years to come. Wood from sustainable forestry is also a good option.

      Good to know:

When choosing durable garden furniture, you should avoid models made of aluminum. The production of aluminum requires large quantities of chemicals and a great deal of energy.

      2. Garden Trend: Outdoor Living

In times of crisis, one's own garden is a safe haven that offers relaxation. It is therefore not surprising that the trend towards outdoor living is constantly growing. This includes both the design of an outdoor lounge in the form of a Gazebo or pergola and the use of an outdoor kitchen.

Both can be wonderfully combined to expand the living and leisure area in the garden: Create a cozy seating area in your garden with a Gazebo that you can cover with climbing plants – this will create a shady arbor. Inside the Gazebo itself, you have plenty of space to set up an outdoor kitchen and comfortable garden furniture.

Garden Trend: Wildflower Gardens The number of wildflowers is steadily declining. Counteract this trend by introducing a variety of wildflower species into your garden. These are a true visual asset to your flowerbeds and a valuable food source for insects and birds.

Rare native plants that are endangered include, for example:

      • Gentian
      • Woodland Orchids
      • Mountain Lupine
      • Yellow Gentian
      • Orchid

        4. Garden Trend: Vertical Gardening

As much greenery as possible – this could be the motto for 2023. No wonder vertical gardening is more popular than ever. This garden trend utilizes vertical surfaces such as trellises, balcony and patio walls, and railings to cover them with climbing plants. The advantage of this trend is that even small balconies, terraces, and less attractive garage walls can be transformed into creative, green oases without much effort.

Anything goes: Use climbing roses, Japanese knotweed, wisteria, grapevines, or ivy to green trellises, walls, and more.

Tip: An outdoor kitchen includes appliances such as a grill, stove, refrigerator, and work surfaces designed for outdoor use. An outdoor kitchen allows you to cook and eat outdoors, which is especially popular during the warmer months.
Tip: For your raised beds and vegetable gardens, you can use heirloom varieties. More and more retailers now offer a wide variety of heirloom fruits and vegetables, which are not only delicious but also worth growing. By doing so, you also help preserve rare varieties.
