Build your own trellises – simple instructions for DIY climbing aids
To give your trailing and climbing plants stable support as they grow, trellises are the ideal solution. But you don't have to break the bank: With little effort and for a small amount of money, you can easily build practical climbing aids yourself. We'll explain how to make trellises and climbing aids in the form of picket fences – and how to cleverly repurpose old everyday objects into climbing supports.
Which plants need a climbing aid?
Trellises and climbing aids are used wherever plants want to reach for the sky. This applies to vegetables and berry bushes as well as ornamental plants.

Stretch cotton twine as a trellis
Not a long-lasting trellis, but it serves its purpose very well seasonally: A trellis made of twine is perfect for tomatoes, for example. Tomatoes don't climb in the traditional sense, but they still appreciate a little support during their growth phases.
For the twine trellis, you will need:
- Twine (preferably cotton or jute)
- Several sturdy stakes
Insert the stakes into the ground in a row at regular intervals. Stretch the twine between the stakes – ideally in three sections: top, middle, and bottom. Make sure the strings are taut so they really support the plants.
Building Trellises for Perennial Plants
Perennial ornamental plants like climbing roses or clematis need sturdier trellises that can withstand the elements. But don't worry – building them is quick and easy; you don't need to be a professional.

Building a trellis from roof battens
You can build a trellis or espalier from standard roof battens. Depending on its size, it can be used in the garden bed or to support potted plants. The height of the trellis depends on the plant for which you want to build it. Since climbing plants can vary in size, it's best to find out beforehand how high your plant can climb and determine the necessary size of your trellis accordingly.
For a medium-sized trellis made of roof battens, you will need:
- three to four roof battens
- saw
- screws
- weatherproof wood stain (optional)
Lay two of the roof battens parallel to each other on the ground. Cut the remaining slats to size with a saw – depending on how wide you want your homemade trellis to be. Place the shortened pieces at regular intervals on the two long roof battens. This creates a kind of ladder. Screw the short slat pieces to the roof battens. Finally, you can brush your DIY trellis with wood stain to increase its durability.
You can now place the finished trellis freely in the garden bed, use it for potted plants, or even mount it on a house wall.
